Sumoylation

Sumoylation is a post-translational modification of proteins by covalently binding of small proteins encoded by SUMO gene 1-5. This modification effects various cellular processes, such as nuclear-cytosolic transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, protein stability, response to stress, and progression through the cell cycle.
