Cerebral amyloid angiopathy of the Icelandic type is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable penetrance caused by a mutation of the cystatin C (CST3) gene. Cerebral hemorrhage occurs in elderly people because of amyloid deposition in the vessels of the cortex and leptomeninges.
