Das ITGB3-Gen kodiert eine wichtige Komponente des Glycoprotein IIb-IIIa Komplexes, welcher für die Bindung von Fibrinogen und die Aggregation von Thrombozyten verantwortlich ist. Mutationen verursachen die selten autosomal rezessive Glanzmann-Thrombasthenie dagegen sind Polymorphismen für die Alloimmun-Thrombozytopenie verantwortlich.
Das Gen besitzt eine Größe von etwa 60kb. Es ist nur eine Spleißvariente mit 15 Exons bekannt, welche alle translatiert werden.
In der Orginalpublikation beginnt die Translation an der Codonposition -26. In den heutigen Datenbanken wird die Durchnummerierung mit 1 begonnen. Aus diesem Grunde sind aber viele alte Mutationsbezeichungen um 26 versetzt.[Error: Macro 'ref' doesn't exist]
Das thrombozyten-spezifische Alloantigen-System Pl(A) basiert auf eine Mutation an der Codonposition 59, welche in der Orginalarbeit als L33P beschrieben wurde. Diese Mutation ist die häufigste Ursache für Syndrome der immun-bedingten Thrombozyten Destruction, insbesondere die neonatale Alloimmun-Thrombocytopenie und Posttransfusions-Purpura.[Error: Macro 'ref' doesn't exist]
