Das familiäre periodische Fieber ist eine autosomal dominante Erkrankung, die durch Mutationen des TNFRSF1A-Gens hervorgerufen wird. Das klinische Bild ist durch rezidivierende Entzündungsschübe gekennzeichnet, die jedoch keine bleibenden Schäden, wie Amyloidose, hinterlassen.
Das familiäre periodische Fieber wurde erstmalig bei einer Schottischen Familie über mehrere Generationen beobachtet. Bei allen Betroffenen stellten sich periodisch schwere Entzündungszeichen ein (Fieber, Leukozytose, erhöhte Blutsenkung). Schwere Dauerschäden wie zum Beispiel eine Amyloidose traten nicht auf.[Error: Macro 'ref' doesn't exist]
